VACATION!

I must be getting lazy in my old age. After 37 years of working for a living, I'm awfully sick and tired of it, even though I went to part-time when I took this job several years ago! You know it's pretty bad when you exist for days off.

And LIVE for vacation every year! Three weeks at home, now that's the ticket. And that's where I am right now, starting yesterday. Yay!

I sure could get used to being retired. I have been thinking, "only 10 more years to go Jude", as they will automatically retire me at 65 where I work. But when you think about it, 10 years is a veeeery long time! Talking to someone the other day got me thinking though. You may already know this but it's something I just never found out about until now; apparently you can have an early retirement at 60, your pension payments are just a bit smaller.

What does this mean?

It means, she says gleefully, that I MAY only have to wait FIVE more years! I'll have to look into it of course, and see what kind of drop in pension amounts we're talking about, and if it would be enough for me to live on, pay bills etc.

Who knows? I may be retired in JUST FIVE MORE YEARS. **grins**

In the meantime, for now I'm going to enjoy this 3 weeks at home, and I plan to be completely and unabashedly lazy.

Some things can't be left though, and one of them is what I need to start now. Laundry. I'll be lazy after.

I wish you all a great weekend, take good care of each other!

OF GRANOLA BARS AND NUMB-BUMS

My friend Debbers reminded me of dental visits and how hilariously painful they can be. And THAT reminded me of my own problem which necessitated a visit to Dr. I.L. Drillya 2 weeks ago.

2 years ago I paid $600 to have a crown put in to replace a molar. That was after I'd had a root canal done on it. 3 weeks ago, while I was enjoying a simple granola bar, the damn crown pulled right out.

So off I go to see the doc, crown wrapped up and in my purse. Incidentally, I had noticed in the few days before getting there, that the gum around the area had started to close over the root of the tooth that used to be there. This is a gruesomely relevant fact to remember.....

I'm sitting in the chair waiting for him to see me, and as I always do, I marvelled at how dentist's chairs are the most uncomfortable damn things to begin with when you'd think they'd at the very least try to fool you into such comfort as to make you actually relax. But ooh noooooo, one must suffer in every way possible at Dr. I.L. Drillya's!

He was extremely busy that day, and they'd got me in only between appointments. Consequently it was a bit of a wait, and as I browsed through a magazine and watched the Ellen Show on the TV overhead I actually did start to become lulled into a relaxtion of sorts. (silly me!) When he finally came in and had a look at my gum where the crown needed to be re-cemented, he shattered all sense of calm in me by informing me he'd need to cut the gum that had closed over the tooth. You know, before he could jam it back in.

So a few deep breaths later, out comes the longest (and most likely the thickest, dullest) needle I've ever seen, and he aims it at my open mouth. Now I admit I'm not really all that queasy about needles, they're over with so fast that who the hell cares anyway. It's things like drills boring holes in your open mouth and take forever and ever, while spewing forth smoke and horrid smells that make me lose my cool. Still, it's a good thing God gave me eyelids to shut as the World's Longest, Thickest Needle approaches my gaping trap.

Then I got to sit and wait some more while the freezing took hold. And back he went to other patients. Again, the TV and magazines lulled me. And again, when he came back to hack up my gum all sense of calm escaped my being.

I couldn't feel a thing due to the magic potion that was inside the World's Longest, Thickest needle, but I haven't yet figured out how to close out completely the knowledge of what he's actually DOING in my mouth, and I realized I was hanging on to the arms of the chair with a death grip.

Which brings up another belly-ache ~~ why are the arms so small and down so damn low? It's really hard to apply said death grip on such teeny surfaces and all it did was give me hand cramps.

Not soon enough he's done hacking up my gums, only to hear him telling me that until the massive blood flow has stopped he cannot proceed. Okay he didn't say "massive" but he might as well have. Now, I'm told I must bite down on the dryest wad of gauze I'd ever felt, and wait some more. I ask you, is it just me or is having something as dry as gauze or kleenex in your mouth not the same feeling as hearing fingernails on a blackboard??

More TV, more magazines, and a now very numb bum from this hard chair. And more waiting. Finally back he comes and begins to prepare the cement mixture to plop in the hole so that he can shove the crown back in. In goes the cement. Which, by the way, sets EXTREMELY fast. And that is followed by mild cursing (from the doc no less!) that blood has gotten into it so now it won't cement jack-shit! And because it set so fast? Yup, he had to drill it all out!

By now my freaking jaw was aching and I was wishing it (and my butt) had been stabbed with The World's Longest, Thickest Needle too. But alas, a good dental patient must suffer.

Of course all of this made the hacked gum bleed profusely again, and back into my mouth went another huge wad of dry gauze. "Bite down please. And hold. For hours and hours, thank you. Mua haha."

By the time he came back and regally ruled that the bleeding had stopped, some of the freezing was beginning to leave me. You know where this is going.

Back in goes some more cement (which stinks so bad, why does everything that they put into your mouth stink so bad??) and this time it wasn't ruined with any blood. Now the crown needs to be jammed into place. Keep in mind, there is a pin on the bottom of the crown that needs to be shoved down to help hold it. It's a very sharp pin, and the freezing is fast leaving me. But I'm not about to let on by giving any sharp cries, as my ass can't take much more of this and I just want it done!

Finally it's in place. "Bite down, and we'll see if the bite needs to be adjusted." Well of course it's 'off' and sitting too high. So Dreaded Drill comes out but this time I'm less bothered by it as I know it's drilling into fake tooth and not any real tooth of mine.

And then it's done and I can leave. I must have been quite a sight waddling home with a Numb Bum though. I have to cross a very busy thoroughfare on the way, and don't ask me how but it's true that if your butt cheeks have no feeling it somehow affects how your legs work. Who'da thunk it!!?!

2 weeks later and I'm still terrified to chew anything on that side of my mouth for fear of this crown pulling out again. Maybe like a good little one-brain-celled mentalpausal person I'll soon forget the experience at Dr. I.L. Drillya's hands, and chew to my heart's content once again.

Until then though, no more granola bars for this chick.

Soup/icecream/jello/pudding, anyone?

Have a fantastic weekend, and take good care of each other.

PRETTY QUIET

Hiya folks! It's been pretty quiet around here and not much to post or write home about. After a sweltering July so far August has been absolutely lovely. We've had temperatures that are either cooler (60's) or just in the low 70's with sun and some cloud. It's perfect for me!

Another couple of work weeks and then I'm on vacation at home for 3 whole weeks! I'm so looking forward to that. I plan on catching up on sleep, general rest, and doing some odds and ends projects around the house. AND hopefully getting out with my camera to a cemetery or two!

Already the days are getting noticably shorter and the nights a bit cooler. This is the time of year that holds promise for the beautiful autumn that is just around the corner. The big stores like WalMart are starting to become overrun with parents frantic to spend their hard earned money on back to school clothing and supplies for their school aged kids, too. In talking to a lot of parents, I'm of the belief that I couldn't afford to have kids these days!! When I was in school our parents only had to buy us a few new outfits to wear and some new shoes at the beginning of each new school year. The SCHOOLS supplied all of the necessary supplies! How times have changed.

Not to mention how "back then" families thrived on one income with one parent home raising the kids. Mortgages were paid off in 25 years, family vacations every summer and an average family was 4, not 2 kids. What has happened to our world since then? **sigh**

Things at work have settled down finally, as we have 2 new girls that are just nicely getting trained. So we aren't as short staffed now and I'm not having to work extra days all the damn time. I should have knocked on wood, just talking about that makes me think I've jinxed it!! LOL

I hope your week is going well and that you're staying cool where you are. Take good care of each other, and until next time.......

PEACE!

GOD'S PAINTBRUSH

People who know me, know how sunsets are one of my favourite things. Every one of them brings a grounding calm over me. The sky might be completely cloudless with just a glow, there may be no colour really to speak of.

Or, you might get this. I took these shots a couple of days ago.

I swear I never edited the colours in these, all I did was resize them and border them.

This is what I live for when I watch sunsets!

About 20 years ago I lived in a highrise (10 stories up) facing west. The brilliant sunsets there with unimpeding houses and garages like I have now, would have made some excellent pictures. I didn't have a digital camera then though!

Another aspect of "looking up" brings another reason to grab the camera. Clouds.

You've all seen some of the storm clouds etc. that I've posted here, but how about something else? I think everyone at some time in their life has watched clouds and picked out shapes in them. I did just that several days ago too.

A little Angel girl in a pony tail sitting on a cloud:

After our "Sweaty July" here, we've so far had a cooler August. Today we actually got a little rain, and the temperatures are nice and cool! Can you spell "R.E.L.I.E.F."?? So today the skies are full of dark clouds, quite overcast. Although this isn't going to last long, I'm all for that about now!

I hope you're managing to stay cool wherever you are. Have a great upcoming weekend and take good care of each other.

THERE IS A GOD

And He finally brought us some relief!

Today is the coolest day we've had in months, it's only going to a high of around 70 at best, and it's RAINING! As you may remember the ground here is parched and cracked and we're losing plants from that and the heat. Hopefully the end of the hotter weather is over for the summer, at least for the most part. The odd day here and there isn't a big deal.

In all of this parching heat we HAVE had some interesting storms, even though it may have only rained briefly and not enough to do much except settle some dust.
Over the last while I took some shots that were quite pretty.

Of course I love sunsets so I have taken many of those, but even during the day some unusually interesting cloud formations (when we had ANY cloud) made my fingers itch to click the shutter button on my camera. I think I could be one of those people who chases storms, in my case if only to enjoy the awesome beauty overhead.

It's not as if we don't still have an abundance of lush greenery here, our neighbourhood, in fact our city, is quite a green space. I believe our provincial capital city has more parks in it that any elsewhere in Canada. Just a zoom-in shot across our back alley frames a picture in so much greenness from our yard and a neighbouring yard behind us.

And for all of the flowers that dried up brown as toast, we do still have some that are hardy enough to have thrived with the help of hubby's watering. And others that live in our backyard and don't get the whole day's sun on them.

We had a storm go through here a week ago that was just awesome. Although it had the makings to spur official storm warnings around us, the edges of it only skirted over us and not a drop of water or hail was to be had here. The beauty of it though, was recorded by my shutter finger.

This was the very edge of it, taken from the front yard:

And these were taken from the back yard:

It's a long weekend here in Canada and today I was hoping to get out with the camera somewhere, maybe my favourite cemetery. But because of the rainy day it didn't work out. And you know what? We need the rain more than I need the pictures!

I hope you're having a great weekend wherever you are. Take good care of each other and keep looking up. You never know what you might see overhead!

TEXTURE

"Texture" was the theme of the July Photo Competition and these were my 3 entries.

1. "SUNWASHED"

That was taken this past spring when the MayDay tree was just starting to sprout it's leaves. I liked the way the sun and shadows played softly against the roughness of the wall.

2. "ENCRUSTED"

I took this, one of many shots, in my favourite cemetery here last fall. I really liked the rusty orange colours and the way the sun pinpointed it.

3. "FROM A MAUI BEACH"

I brought these shells and sand home from my favourite beach in my favourite place in the world. That was on my last trip there back in 1989!

Happy Hump Day to you all, I hope your week is going well. Take good care of each other!
